This talented, gifted and vibrant young lady of 21 is the new up-coming star in the local music industry. Born in the beautiful and friendly cat-city (Kuching) of Sarawak, Shal’s wish and dream had always been to write & sing meaningful songs and poems so that she can reach out and touch the lives of as many people as possible. Her dream came into reality when her debut album "A Special Note" was launched @ Tribes, Holiday Inn Kuching on 20th November 2004.
Shal’s interest in music goes way back when she was just a little child singing and performing in front of friends and relations at gatherings. By age five, she attended piano lessons, but her interest in piano switched to guitar and since then this young lady has more than eight guitars in her collection and has sung and performed at many, many more functions and parties both in Sarawak and in KL.
Her songs are inspired from a combination of different bands and singers, however they are all written, composed and sung based on her own experiences in life; coping with changes and going through life as a teenager and a young adult. When we listen to her songs, we can feel that most of them relate to the various experiences that people go through in their lives. Songs like "Just Fine", "When Everything Seems Like Nothing" and "Message In A Bottle" are pretty uplifting and inspirational; and "The Voices" relates to society and a need to be appreciated and accepted; "Back to you" relates on changes etc. Shal writes about love, pain, changes and hope. They are beautiful songs which are targeted not only to a certain age group but to people of all ages and walks of life.
Shal is unique in the sense that she is the first Kenyah girl from Sarawak/Malaysia to write, compose, plays the lead guitar, sings and co-produced her own debut album "A Special Note".
"Shal’s ability to play the guitar and at the same time sings in her unique style portrays flair and gifts. Her creativity and ability as a budding and promising artiste should be an inspiration to all young people who aspires to excel in the world of music. Shal has created an icon for Sarawak, an icon for her family and an icon for herself. I believe Shal can one day reach her dream and go International", said Hanifah Taib-Alsree, the Guest of Honour and Executive Director of Kristal Harta Sdn Bhd - Cats Radio, during the launching.
Shal’s first song was written when she was 12 years old, and by age 16 she had formed her first all-girl band called "Miz D’meaner". During this time, she wrote several songs like "When Everything Seems Like Nothing", and with her back-up vocalist Sarah, wrote "Petrified". Later, when some of the band members had to leave Kuching, Shal formed another band called "Leesa Muse" which comprised of 3 main members, ie Shal,Karen & Zal.
It was during this time that she wrote and made a demo (in KL) on her songs like "Foolish Frailty", "Message In A Bottle", and few others which are not included in the debut album. This band lasted about 3 years, when Shal decided to concentrate on her debut album. She met-up with Kiya of the "Vagrants" who co-produced her album @ Zanzibar Music Studio, backed by talented sessionists like Gary Gideon, Aziz and Kiya. She later went to Sydney to get her album mastered by Don Bartley @ Studio 301 in early October 2004.
The genre of Shal songs "A Special Note" are mostly alternative rock, pop rock and rock ballad, and the concept are more on "live" rather than a "perfect and an overly produced album". The album is released under Shzogawa Records, a record label conceptualized by Shal herself, to help in the recordings, distributing and promotion of her records and products.
Besides being a talented songwriter - singer, Shal is also a very talented poet when she was named as one of the world’s best poets for the year 2003/2004 by the International Society of Poets, USA. Shal’s poems have won her "Outstanding Silver Bowl Achievement Award" and have been published in several journals/books like "The Eternal Portraits". Shal is a VIP member of the International Society of Poets in the USA.
An avid traveller, Shal has travelled far and wide to countries in Europe, England, Scotland, Australia, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. Her travelling has given her vast knowledge on the life and culture of the people and countries that she visited. Shal is also very keen in musicals and plays. While staying in London, she has frequented theatres like Her Majestys Theatre, Adelphly Theatre, Prince of Wales Theatre etc to watch plays and musicals like "The Lady In Black", "Phantom of the Opera", "Cats", "Les Miserables", "Buddy", "Hunchback of Nortredame", "Witches of Eastwick" etc etc. These experience and exposures have in some ways given her the inspiration to write her songs and poems.
Shal’s wish for her debut album is for her listeners to accept and appreciate the songs which she has written to people who have made the difference in her life, and who have helped her in one-way or another to be a stronger and better person.
