"[A ] folkish, countrified debut album, "Painted Tiles," pays homage to some forgotten past while whispering at the doorstep of current indie-flavored dream twang."
-- Chicago Tribune, 7.30.06
"The album throws a curve ball initially, making one think it is alt.country, but it’s far more pop influenced judging by a light, airy jazz-tinted ditty like "Blue". Then she throws another gem entitled "Flood" that recalls the likes of Dolly Parton and Porter Wagoner or The Handsome Family."
-- PopMatters, 6.23.06
"Itâs bouncy and choked with pop acoustic riffs and magnificent arrangements. Check out Amalea if youâre interested in hearing some damn fine singer/songwriter joints."
-- Smother.Net, 6.06
"Tshilds’ mild, acoustic guitar-based melodies[...] whisk away the noise
and mess of the outside world a while."
-- Venus, Summer, 2006
"Of course what I like about [Painted Tiles] is the same things I love about recent songs by Rachel Ries, Shelley Short, Birdie Busch and Casey Dienel and that is the sweet, unadorned melodies that seem to have always existed but are only recently being rediscovered and put on to disc by these women."
-- songs:illinois, 4.19.06
It’s ’Tshilds’ on MySpace, and ’Childs’ out loud.
Fallen Fan Records proudly announces the release of Painted Tiles, the debut solo effort from accomplished Chicago artist Amalea Tshilds. Having made a name for herself as a founding member of Tallulah and Paulina Hollers, Tshilds has enlisted an amazing collective of some of Chicagoâs most prominent musicians, including current and former members of Tortoise, Califone, Wilco, and The Bitter Tears, to create an album of startling depth, beauty and motion.
Capitalizing on a core group of whoâs-who musicians, Tshilds’ songs are languid, sparkling musings on emotions that often canât be named â turned into sprawling tune poems; an immersive and compelling musical experience.
Tshilds’ timing and patience moves Painted Tiles through a dramatically shifting countryside of sound so complete it presents the listener with a world in itself; a landscape which grows with each visit.
Comparisons to acts like Ida, Low, and Azure Ray seem apt at times, but something unique is happening too. The calm appreciation of the players to Tshilds’ core material and Graeme Gibsonâs perfect, earthy production, creates a ghostly quality, like a winter day remembered in a dream.
Recorded by Graeme Gibson at Clava Studios in Chicago, Painted Tiles, released May 30, 2006, features : Jim Becker, Doug McCombs, Leroy Bach, David Rhodes, Mark Greenberg, Ryan Rapsys, Dianne Izzo, Dan Fliegel, Michael McGinley, Laurie Lee Moses, Amy Warren, and Graeme Gibson.
