SEASON’S GREETINGS!
The Christmas Tree
The snow was falling harder now
And it was difficult to see.
Truth held
Not far off
Up the hill,
The known road,
Safety.
But
Suddenly
Seemed so far now
With the snow so
Heavy falling.
&
Down low
It was surely
Getting difficult to see
And heavy was this
Beautiful
Dying
Christmas
Tree.
A fear had taken root
In his deep heart
And he was panicked.
He told himself
It was not far
But somehow now
It seemed so
With the snow
Oh so
Very
Far
Away.
Snow
Is very far
Away...
On ahead he rushed
Afraid to stop
The snow was up
To his waist
Then deeper
&
Every step
He kept
Turning
Looking back
At that dying
Christmas tree.
Which
He dragged
& Pulled
Slow along
Thru the hungry snow.
A thing so quiet,
Green,
So full,
Like him,
So innocent.
A green lamb
For the altar,
For the feast,
The mass
Of greed.
For sure
A very beautiful
Green lamb
Christmas tree.
It was completely dark now
And the snow bit harder
On his face
His stinging eyes were
Just about to freeze
Closed shut.
Up the hill,
He kept going
Up the hill.
His stomach hurt.
He barely breathed.
He might die.
One never knows.
Right here, right now and they’d never find
On this hill
His body
Until spring
Again
For
No one knew
Where he was
This tree was to be
His big surprise
Let people see
He could be counted on
To be.
A silly notion
Now
It seemed
To put one’s self in peril
To try and prove
A thing given
By faith
& love alone
If not by circumstance.
Most things
Seemed that silly now
And he thought for a second
To leave this dying tree behind
As well,
It was so heavy
Snow freezing on its’ branches,
Limbs
Where it’s blood, the sap
Flowed out, was sticky still, Ah heck
No one would have to know.
Heck,
He used the word heck
For fear of offending
Gods his father
Had to him
Early on
Introduced
And who might
Just
Have a say
In what went on
One snowy day.
But he quickly drove
Such thoughts deep
Into his
Mind & drove
Harder up the hill
His dying
Christmas lamb behind,
The pulling of
Against the snow
Sang a sad song
Down below.
(Breathing)
He
Thought about his mother,
The post office,
Where it was
Bright and warm & waiting
Up the hill
Up the hill.
He
Thought about
Movie plots,
Favorite snacks,
Fruits and nuts,
Of
Garden fresh vegetables
All waiting
Up the hill
He pulled
The dying Christmas fur
Bleeding sap where he
The other son had struck it down
With his father’s ax.
Which was lost in the snow
Oh terrible swift sword!
He bit his lip and
Harder drove
Drove on
Up the hill.
Christmas didn’t matter now.
Presents didn’t matter.
He was interested only
In getting
Through this storm.
A Storm
His own fierce pride
Had lulled him to
The eye of
The heart of,
The hell of
Onward
Up the hill
He and the tree
Up the hill,
Up the hill,
With the tree that had become
Much like him
A dying green
Christmas lamb for sacrifice.
A gift,
A mistake
In an other wise
Unwise life.
His shins & hips
Were sore where
The crust cut him as
In pain he pulled himself, his cross
Further up the hill.
Up the hill,
Up the hill,
Further
Up the hill.
His feet
Half froze,
Half prickly wet,
But there was no part
Of his pointed mind to waste
On such a thought as that.
Just a little further on
And he would be all right.
Up the hill,
Up the hill
He drove on
Up the hill.
He fell against the crust
It cut a gash into his forehead.
Blood trickled down into his eyes
Still, he struggled on.
Up the hill
Up the hill
He struggled
Up the hill
A (heavy)
Chipmunk
Darted out
Across the snow
In front one boot
Lifting up as
One went down
And then
He saw the light.
The soft white light
Was shining from
Ms. Big Bellyâs kitchen,
No more
Give or take than
One (A) hundred feet ahead.
Mary was breast-feeding her
Holy one
The source of light
That shines on hilltops brightest when
Darkest
Hangs the pitch of night.
He stopped
&
Paid himself
A breath
Only One
&
With a push
He made the road
But he stopped not
Rather he
Quick
Scurried
With his lamb
Down toward
The tiny town
Where twinkled lights
Glowing like
His green heart did
When promised once
A merry night
Soon to prove
Not this night.
Something less than merry.
This winter’s
Most wintry night
Several cars
Drove by and slowed
Peered out
Windows
Covered with snow
Saw a small boy
Bringing low
A green lamb Christmas cross.
A sweet sight on
A lonely night
When he reached
A destination
He left the dying lamb upon
The snowy sidewalk next to
The flag pole,
And inside.
His mother asked,
"Where have you been?"
The boy exclaimed,
Excitedly!
âI have gotten us a tree!â
And in his life
Would he exclaim
No news more
Happily
Than "I
Have gotten us a tree."
Putting aside her anguish
Her anger,
And concern,
She said softly, "Well, o.k.,
Let us then
Have a peek
At this famous Christmas tree."
Forgetting
His exhaustion
He felt thrilled
To be showing Ma
The green lamb Christmas (cross)
And imagined
How her face
Would light
At this most great
Accomplishment
By one known only
Up
âTil then
As
A weaklin’
Youngest son.
And happy then
Just to be
Upon a once again
Merry spinning
Dancing bauble
No one else
At all.
His pride was swelling
&
He could not
Believe his eyes when they
Descended
To
The top step for
There next to the flag pole on
The snowy sidewalk
Where he’d left it
An impression
Of a (tree)
(Like on a life, a dream)
But his green heart
Would alone adorn
That failing, falling Christmas eve
For it was gone
His (green heart) famous
Green lamb Christmas tree!
And moving
Slowly
Up the road
Away
Atop
A car
Silent
Like the stars
Westward
Went
The green of him
The dying green lamb
Christmas tree.
Nailed on high
Moving west
Wayward to the sea.
And
That boy looked at his mother,
That mother so
The boy
And he began to cry.
"I had a tree, I did,"
He sighed.
"I’m sure you did,"
She replied,"
And
Knew that look
In his eyes.
In his heart,
The green had turned.
Then sudden
Something in the snow
Purest red began to glow
The reddest red
Began to flow
Then disappeared
Beneath the snow...
It was Christmas Eve.
And the family had no tree.
He’d
Sore & bloody
Shins & hips,
Near frost-bitten
Hands & feet
A missing ax
A turned heart
No green lamb
Dying
Christmas tree
His heartâs wish stolen
His own no more
But not this newborn hurt
This hurt was his and his alone
Earned to hold
Nearby the fire
The fire his father
Kindled up
Without that cursed cold-blue ax
As
His young heart traveled westward, stolen,
no more his own...
But not this hurt...
Atop the hill
Where the boy
Had dragged his famous
Green lamb tree
Onto the road
And stopped not
A stray dog sniffed
At his tracks
In the snow
Then stopped
The dog
And gazed
On Down
A slippery hill
Upon
The sleepy little town
All lit up
Like a star
Where a boy went darkly down
And broken hearted there became,
A fitting state
For any man.
Epilogue
We follow
Such
In life
Our dreams
Up the hills
We venture green
Then
Down the hill
To lose it
Seems
Allâ¦
Turns
There
And you
Once
Down the hill
Now,
Better be you
Climbing still,
Than with gold
Going down.
A dying green lamb
Christmas heart
Huge
With sacrifice.
Keep close that green lamb Christmas heart
When go you traveling down.
Down the hill
Many are wanting
Down the hill
& If
Up you must
Then down you will
Go a traveling’
Down the hill, down the hill.
And all once green
Is turned
And
Forever is exposed to be
Not to be
Like a dying green lamb
Christmas tree.
Green,
It is Innocence
It is Jealousy
It is Selfishness
It is lifeâ¦
And
Jealousy is a kind of innocence
Innocence, a kind of death.
Death, a kind of dream,
In the name of fathers, sons and ghosts.
He stopped
&
Paid himself
A breath
Only One
&
With a push
He made it.
