"I haven’t heard any other Dutch act produce such an energetic performance on record so far this year." (https://www.tradebit.com) "Blues Brother Castro knows how to evoke that indefinable, yet essential element that pop music needs: Excitement!" (OOR). "The band scene in Amsterdam is on the rise and Blues Brother Castro is one of the strongest arguments to prove that statement." (Volkskrant). "BBC are amongst the top bands in the country, that could put Holland back on the map of the international music scene!". (https://www.tradebit.com)
Tjeerd Meindersma and Leon Caren were already playing music together in high-school: So when the two friends both moved to Amsterdam in their student years, and ended up in the same house, starting a band was an easy step to take. After working with several musicians, the perfect format was found in 2003, as they teamed up with bass player Mila van de Wall and drummer Hajo de Reijger: During this time Blues Brother Castro was formed.
From this time on, things went fast for the foursome. Their self-released EP Flirt was greeted with great enthusiasm by both journalists and promoters. Their growing live-reputation got them doing an impressive amount of shows, including open-air festivals such as Parkpop, Metropolis and Werfpop and also their first appearance on the main stage of Amsterdam’s famous rock-temple ’Paradiso’. The same year Blues Brother Castro organised a tour through Croatia, of which coverage was featured in the Dutch music magazine ’Fret’. Not bad for an unsigned band.
After selling pretty much all copies of ’Flirt’, the band started recording their debut-album. Along came producer Corno Zwetsloot who was responsible for the raunchy and energetic sound on ’Money Maker Me’, capturing the bands live energy, and producing one of the most exciting Dutch albums of the year 2004. The Groningen-based label Silent Minority Records offered to release the album, which marked a new episode in Blues Brother Castro’s career. Teaming up with the ambitious young label, made the release of the album an amazing start for both band and label.
The release of Money Maker Me evoked a great deal of positive response from the Dutch press. Enthusiastic reviews appeared on internet, in national news-papers and in Holland’s leading music magazines. After a successful CD-launch party at the Paradiso, the band appeared on the famous national radio show ’Club 3voor12’ and shared the stage with bands such as The Thermals, Mando Diao and Pretty girls make graves.
In January Blues Brother Castro did a successful show at the Noorderslag showcase festival, which was followed by a club tour with the Belgium band Ghinzu. MTV did an item on the band, which was shown 24 times on Dutch television. With Money Maker Me coming out in Germany, Austria and Switzerland in spring, and a new album being recorded this summer, 2005 is looking to be another good year for the band.
Blues Brother Castro has often been called the hardest working band in Holland, and they are going strong. They recently released their first single and Video for the song ’Drunken Boy’ off the Money Maker Me-album. With a second tour coming up this may to England and with tours lined up to Germany and Belgium, BBC is emerging on the international music-scene. Working hard as ever, and spreading their raunchy, energetic alternative rock with great determination.
