“You’re going in many different directions, but they all seem to be about yourself”
This is a quote that a professor recently wrote on one of my papers, and when I read it, I laughed. I knew it would be the perfect description for my new album “Undiscovered Species.” It’s an understatement to say that my new album has a variety of songs on it. From the rebellious Revival to the aural Kiwa Hirsuta, there’s something here for just about everyone.
When I first started this album, I told myself that I was going to make an ambient-oriented collection of songs, with no percussion. This resulted in Hidden Depths, one of the most percussion-driven songs on the album. From that point on, I knew that this album was going to fly all over the place, and it definitely did. I edited the songs constantly based on my moods. A headache led me to remove 90 percent of the percussion from Kiwa Hirsuta, making it more soothing. The sun hurting my eyes led me to sing on the track Sunburst. I split Synapsed Again into two parts out of spite. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more neurotically personal electronic album.
My sounds and samples used in the album came from a variety of places. I used a bunch of royalty free samples (No loops. I hate loops.), a bunch of different synths, and the rest of the sounds were recorded by me personally. You wouldn’t believe how much crazy junk I recorded and put on this album… I beat my microphone with cans, water bottles, and paperclips. I dropped several objects onto my keyboard just to see what sounds would come out of it. I sampled old recordings of my friends. I recorded the weird bird-like sound that my DVD player makes when it’s paused… Like I said, lots of crazy junk. It’s my belief that any sample can be used to make a good song.
In all honesty, I’m not selling this CD for the money. That may sound counter-intuitive, but it’s the truth. I’m selling this CD because I love sharing my music with other people. I love it when someone says they really enjoy my music. Whenever people try to tell me what’s wrong with a song, or what I can do to make a song better, I never listen to them. I do it my own way, because there’s no better feeling in the world than people enjoying music that comes from your own damn vision of what music should be.
… Also, it’s pretty cool to have my drawings turned into album art and CD art. I almost feel like a professional!
So, in the end, the music speaks for itself. Check out the samples, and if you like what you hear, buy yourself a copy and help me get back some of the cash I spent on this thing! Oh, and I love to hear feedback.
