Born a native of North Carolina, Micah Wallace Grimes, also known as Grimey, was first influenced to Hip Hop during the era of Wu-Tang. His first two rap albums consist of Old Dirty Bastard: Return to the 36 chambers and Bones thugs and Harmony: East 1999. Although Hip Hop did not begin during this time period, this is where it began for him. Between his 9th and 11th grade years at North Lenoir High School he was nothing more than a listener and basic critic of rap artist and their music. During his senior year, however, he began to freestyle amongst his fellow peers. Later on he wrote songs whenever he was influenced by certain situations in life. Grimes never really took rap seriously until he met a fellow M.C. by the name of Splash. After getting on the mic a couple of times, Grimes would then notice how different his style was compared to other rappers. Since both of his parents were preachers, he felt awkward when trying to present himself as an artist around others. Fortunately he found a format that he felt comfortable with and stuck with it. Unlike most rap artist, his inspiration comes from other sources of music like soundtracks off of Japanese animation and different quotes that he has heard from both different people throughout the years. Grimey sees Hip Hop as music and nothing else. Although he is aware of the fact that it is a culture founded by us (African Americans), he is also aware of how much it has been twisted around to fit in other categories such as Pop, Country, Gospel, ect. Because of this he feels as if he is lacking certain Hip Hop credentials due to the universal aspect of it all, but insist on songwriting to prove himself as that different breed of M.C.
