Torn Poppies
Biography
Based in Southampton, Hampshire, UK, Torn Poppies comprises of Victoria Sweet (vocals and flute) and her husband Dave Feltham (guitars/keyboards/percussion). Formed in 1996, Torn Poppies were initially influenced by All About Eve, Suzanne Vega and Nick Drake. This revealed a duo who specialise in a guitar/vocal songwriting process, however, over the course of the first album their attention to detail increased, with their instrumentation above the expectation of a mere duo.
By the second album they had dispensed to some degree with the acoustic guitar sound, with the band opting for a more copious soundscape. The band spent part of 1998 touring on the arts centre circuit before beginning work on the Mini Album, introducing a more human dimension to the band’s ethereal sound. It is debatable that if Feltham had not suffered from a loathing of touring, Torn Poppies would have been one of the more popular bands of the 90s and would have sold many more records. Those who are sensitive to the strengths of the duo would rightly argue that this would have severely distracted Sweet and Feltham from their craft as songwriters. They continued to release introspective, chiefly home-recorded albums on the Haunting Melody Records label, playing what many perceived to be a delicate, flawless mix of vulnerable vocals and lambent guitars.
