SOUF STATE CONNECTED
The history of American music is steeped in the rich soil of the Deep South. Practically every form of music, with the exception of hip hop, which genesis is in New York, can trace its origin back down to the fertile soil of the great State of Mississippi.
It makes no difference what the genre the Sip has contributed to it all, producing great artists like gospel greats the Canton Spirituals, blues legend B.B. King, jazz sensation Cassandra Wilson and R & B superstar Brandy Norwood.
Ironically, the only genre of music that Mississippi has yet to produce a major star in is the only genre that doesn’t have it origin in the South. But all of that will change soon if Bwill (pronounced: B-Will) and Lex Luga CEO and president respectively of the fledging Mississippi based label Souf State Connected have anything to say about it.
"It is our hope that in the future Souf State Connected will break down barriers and open doors for other Mississippi artists," says Bwill. "This is definitely our time to shine. Souf State Connected is here to stay."
Although the label was officially formed about four years ago when Lex and Bwill reunited at Jackson State University, where they used to freestyle around campus for friends and fellow rappers, their friendship actually extends back when they were twelve years old, listening to Ice T records and dreaming of being rappers.
"We’ve been rapping since I was twelve," says Bwill. "Everybody in the neighborhood knew us for our raps. When we starting getting serious about rapping a lotta local labels offered us deals to sign with them, but the contracts were so bogus that we decided that it would be in our best interest to start our own label and do everything ourselves."
Borrowing a few pages from fellow music entrepreneurs like Master P and Sean "Puffy" Combs, they did countless local shows slowly building their reputation in the City while pooling their meager resources together for a period of three years. Along the way they acquired enough equipment to build a small studio, plus they signed four new artists: G-Sharpe, The Infamous PJ, Wreckless the Reaper, Lil Daddy the Playa and Nevermore Production (Chapter 13) who were also busy building a fierce reputation within hip hop circles throughout the South and Mid West.
Jacktown Music Vol. 1, Souf State Connected’s debut release, is a nineteen song compilation designed to introduce the label’s roster to the record-buying public and lay down a solid foundation for the label’s upcoming projects. The label includes songs that run the gamut of the more traditional hip hop peppered with a heaping dose of Southern seasoning like the Chapter 13’s song "Legacy’" to the laid back soulful Southern hip hop of "We Hustlaz" featuring B-Will and Eddie Kain. Other outstanding songs on Jacktown Music Vol. 1 include Chapter 13’s reggae-tinged hip hop track "See the Light" and "Do It If You Feel It" featuring production by dDecade of Us from Dirrt.
And if that’s not enough albums are forthcoming from all of the SSC artists. Thus far the albums slated for release are "UNDERGROUND GRINDIN" THE DISPLAY (June 2003),Bwill’s debut entitled Souf State Connected Presents FREEWAY FLIPPIN’ (Aug, 2003); Lex Luga’s GHETTO DREAMS (Oct. 2003) and the underground legend G-Sharpe’s MISSION MISSISSIPPI is scheduled for a Dec. 2003 release.
With a roster of red hot artists backed by strong production and an aggressive marketing plan targeting key markets throughout the nation Souf State Connected is destine to take Mississippi hip hop to the top of the charts.
"We’re in the business of selling Mississippi to the world," said an enthusiastic Lex Luga. "-Jacktown Music Vol. 1 has a flavor for every listener who is a lover of hip hop and rap. We’ve got music for every region, North, South, East and West. Our music has a universal appeal that will touch everybody."
