Born into a family of musicians, it was inevitable that Matt York was going to be doing something in music. As a young kid growing up in Oakville, Ontario, Matt was always singing around the house, serenading the family with old R&B tunes around the supper table. Singing was always Matt’s passion, and he decided to add another aspect to his music by picking up the guitar when he was 14. After his first lesson from his dad, he knew there was no turning back. He began to play around his hometown in coffee houses and parks with his friends drawing crowds from the local schools. Matt continued to jam his soulful tunes with his buddies from high school eventually forming his first band, Further Still. He continued to impress fans everywhere he played and evolved into a serious musician whose name became known all around the Toronto circuit. In 2003 Matt released his first EP - selling almost 8000 copies, the release proved to be more than Matt had hoped for, bringing his unique style and refreshing message into the spotlight.
From coffee houses to concert halls, Toronto’s Matt York has not only gained recognition as one of Canada’s hottest young artists, but has been wowing audiences across the globe with his soulfully fresh style of acoustic funk. After the successful release of his 2003 EP, Matt was ready to step it up a bit, and step it up he did with his new full-length release Under The Streetlights.
Working with producer Justin Koop, Matt tracked 11 songs over 5 months, working diligently on nights and weekends to capture the style and sound Matt was trying to accomplish. The project stretched far beyond making a great record, but it was an opportunity for Matt to bring together all of the amazing musicians and friends he’s been jamming with since he was 17. "Having all of these guys play on the album was really special for me. These were the artists that I used to sit in with in the studio and hope that one day I was able to sing and play as well as they could. The fact that they all we’re excited to work on the album and really dig the material validates for me that I’ve gotten there." Matt will be on tour across the US and Canada for the remainder of 2005 and into 2006 kicking his unique style of acoustic funk. Come see what everyone’s talking about.
