A bit about Jon Braman

Jon Braman found his ukulele in a garbage can on Main Street in Port Washington, NY. Music had always been a big part of Jon’s life, from singing along with the Beatles in the back seat of his parents’ car, to playing trumpet through school in concert bands, jazz bands, klezmer bands, funk and salsa bands, even free jazz bands. The ukulele, a baritone, came complete with a sticker of golfing chimpanzees and quickly become Jon’s sonic security blanket, small enough to carry anywhere, big enough to hold some soul. But it wasn’t until the summer he turned 21, while driving south toward the Smokey Mountains, that Jon finally heard the Outkast song "Miss Jackson." Something clicked. Jon wrote his first "hit" ukulele rap song, "One-two-three" just two years later while living in Hartford, Connecticut. In this case "hit" song means that the team of college students Jon was coaching 80 hours/week in a door to door campaign for clean air with the Connecticut Public Interest Research Group really liked the song. Within a year he had recorded his first CD, "Sprouting Daisies Out of My Hair." Jon has entertained hundreds of friends, family members, activists, college students and passing toddlers at parties, bookstores, park benches, open mics and farmers markets from NY to the Big Island of Hawaii. He currently lives in Wa’a wa’a, just past the mailboxes before Papaya Farms Road with his fiancée, Lisette, 10 goats, 70 chickens, 8 ducks, 3 geese, and 2 kittens: Etty and Boots.

Jon would love it if you called his music hip hop, although it’s usually played with just the uke and vocals. His style owes as much to the wordy heart-politics of Bob Dylan and Ani DiFranco, as to the goofy funk-play of his idols Andre and Big Boi. The hooks are catchy and the beats surprisingly danceable on tracks like "Tip top of the world" and "Gandhi." On his more melodic side, songs like "Non-hydro" and "A little relief," are full of details from everyday life and jazzy scatting that makes them intimate and emotional but always fun. Jon writes music for the moment, for people who care about people and about the planet. He’s not sure if it’s possible to make the world more just and sustainable simply by playing his ukulele, but he really wants you to hear his music and at least think about it.

In the past few months Jon has been writing songs furiously and working on putting together a band to record a second CD!
