I’m A Reggaebaby - "describes who I am"!
"This is my life is you know what I mean to be a reggae singer is my dream" Lyrics from title track song written from the heart.
Jean Mclean is a musician, singer, songwriter born in Birmingham England. A youth of the 80’s she sang in her School Choir and played trombone in the School Brass Band. Musical from an early age, she started writing seriously at sixteen and was at that time strongly influenced by the Rastafarian scene.
Subjected to the British pop culture and her parents with strong roots in Jamaican reggae. Formed a pop/rock band called ’Double Vision’ in which she played bass guitar. Not long after that Jean was enlisted, by her brother BLACKA to play keyboards/sing and then later rhythm guitar in Roots & Culture Reggae band ’SCEPTRE’. Memorable experience playing support band to Sugar Minott and playing at Handsworth Carnival in same line up as Steel Pulse.
Since then she has been working on a solo career releasing a number of records and performing in clubs, in the UK and France. Jean was also featured in National French Magazine REGGAE-SKA-DUB ’RAGGA’ No.15.
As a musician Jean was able to build own tracks in the studio of PATO BATON at GWARN International. I’m a Reggaebaby tracks are written, arranged and studio work done by Jean, with PATO BANTON as engineer, with some excellent live mixes. The album also includes "Killing Me Softly" by Roberta Flacks, which was also covered by Lauryn Hill. Let us know what you think?
Jean states...
"Artists I like are Sandra Cross brilliant lovers rock singer, fabulous voice. When I saw her sing for the first time I wanted to be where she was. And Janet Kay with ’Silly Games’ what a song, a classic, every singers dream.
Dennis Brown, always liked his songs and voice. He started young but his approach was innovative and individual (eg Save a little love for me). I remember going to see him when I was 18 in London and he was dancing so much he fell over on stage. Frankie Paul whose vocals are fantastic live. Prince Lincoln Royal Rasses (Humanity) their amazing harmonies and unique vocal expression.
Women I respect are Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt and Marcia Griffins - ’I shall sing as long as I live’. Lauryn Hill - cause she stays true to herself.
You will probably hear a bit of them all in my music but mostly I try to be innovative and original."
The following was written by a reviewer on Godsofmusic and captures the essence -
"Jean Mclean supplies her own harmonies beautifully. She caresses her notes. It’s interesting when someone loves something they make it lovely. Listen and you’ll be blessed."
