’Nick Stuart and the Federales may sound like the latest installment of a Saturday morning at the movies western, and the website does little to identify our heroes but it is in fact the name of a guitar band, the kind you hope never rides away into the sunset. Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter who Nick Stuart or the Federales are because what counts is the music and that needs no explanation. As the full force of Walk Away hits you begin to welcome back the kind of intelligent, melodic, energetic guitar driven rock that used to come with college as a prefix. College rock was a badge of honour, worn by the beaten army of great musicians who were critically lauded and never paid a fraction of what they were worth.

Four boys from Athens changed all that and suddenly rock’n’roll with more upstairs than just big hair and a ton of lacquer was all the rage, while that paved the way for bands like Nick Stuart and the Federales , the clever ones never tried to repeat what had been done so well. And 24 HOUR SECURITY scores heavily on the originality front, it may have its roots in the late 1970s, early 80s, but its heart and soul are here today.

Hard Heart makes an unhurried but definite impact, there’s bounce and drive with an absence of over the top theatrics. The catalyst for all that is good about 24 HOUR SECURITY is undoubtedly the voice of Nick Stuart, on the delicate Giulia’s Leaving, Beauty As A Weapon and Maybe Next Time it has a yearning soulful ache that lifts all three. Those three songs, in fact the whole album is the same, are beautifully crafted and written but somehow without the depth of Stuart’s voice you feel a vital dimension would be missing.

Throughout its 11 tracks 24 HOUR SECURITY proves itself to be a cut above, but Nick Stuart and the Federales show they know the value of a good old-fashioned catchy rock’n’roll tune. In the context of the album as a whole, Message To You is practically commercial.’
