There are works and movements created by people who are so of their own time they soon become short hand definitions of it; icons if you will. We had Elvis in the ’50’s, the Beatles in the ’60’s, Nirvana in the ’90’s, and so on. Then on the other hand there are those that seem to exist outside of time altogether. People like Jeff and Jon Celentano who always seemed to be up to something different. If the hip world was diggin’ the Seattle sound, they were into jazz. If the crowd was all about hip-hop, they’d turn up the surf rock. When most would have stayed in L.A. to make it big, these two non-apologetic misfits, moved to Las Vegas and with the help of some of their own strange kind, formed a kick ass band.
As unlikely and yet appropriate as it sounds, Jeff met future band mate Rusty Petersen on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise. Well, the Vegas attraction anyway. When they weren’t cruisin’ through space and dealing with uncouth aliens Jeff and Rusty were harmonizing to Beatles tunes between shows. This was enough to re-ignite Rusty’s interest in playing music again and he soon became the third harmony and rhythm guitarist of Jeff and Jon’s new band. Then there was Jared.
Coming from the great white north of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Jared Dalley came to Las Vegas with a Stratocaster, a dream and a few dollars in his pocket. Jared met Jeff and Jon on the canals of Venice, Italy - even if they were only the canals in front of the Venetian Hotel, where they were working as gondoliers. Jared dreamed of rock stardom and the newly formed trio was the perfect outlet for his need to shred. The stars began to align.
As if the grand canals of Venice had not bestowed enough good tidings on the brothers and their new found musical cohorts, along came Matt Bennett, who brought to the table not only his solid drumming, but a fifth harmony voice as well. Matt proved to be indispensable to the group not only as a hard working performer, but an even harder working engineer in the recording studio.
Sonically speaking, Tripsitter is what you’d get if Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney, Freddie Mercury and Ben Folds joined forces in some strange alternate musical universe. Clearly, they look to the past for inspiration all the while keeping a close eye on the present in order to help shape their future.
Tripsitter is without a doubt the wrong music for the times...and that’s exactly why people dig ’em. Their music is like listening to a Twilight Zone-esque radio transmission from a past that never was. No samples, no guest rappers, no watered down Gap store punk. Just great music that pays attention to melody and structure instead of demographics. They make this stuff because they want to, it’s who they are and it’s reflected in their work. This is Tripsitter and you would do well to listen to them as they play music from their own time in their own way.
