Sun5 Bio 2005
Since coming together in Boston in 2002, Sun5 has been turning heads and ears, while making hips shake in the New England area, with their own blend of good vibes and infectious, soulful, grooving roots-rock.
While embracing their collective genre bending influences, and adding a little funk energy, to evocative lyricism and solid, old-school songwriting, they have been carving their own personal niche in the local music scene.
They have honed in their dynamic live show at Boston’s biggest venues including the Paradise Rock Club, the Avalon Ballroom, Harper’s Ferry and the former House of Blues in Cambridge.
Their first studio release, "Libertad", is just a sample of the palette of sounds and musical flavors that Sun5 has collected and marinated over the last three years, and uses at their disposal to paint their own sonic landscape. After building a set of 60 plus original songs, they felt that this collection of tunes not only captured their raw, live energy, but gives a cross reference of everything they have to offer. Sun5 breaks down genre boundaries, no doubt, but the prime, sonic elements are always there: rock, blues, Latin, funk and soul. From the acoustically driven, burden-shedding title track and the poignantly stirring, soul-searching of "Swirl", to the sweet Americana melancholy of "Evangeline", through the gritty self resignation of "Personal Cell", Sun5 weaves their story while staying true to their signature sound.
Up front are two gifted performers and musicians, vocalist Thomas Kivlan and guitarist Yohei Nakamura. Kivlan delivers the goods. He knows how to tell a story and he knows how to deliver it with his soulful tenor in a way that inspires you to think about life and its possibilities. While guitarist, Yohei Nakamura’s sonic layering brushes across Sun5’s canvas and climaxes in his incendiary solos. Borrowing the blues vocabulary and technical proficiency of Stevie Ray Vaughn combined with the swagger of Jimmy Hendrix, Yohei efficiently adds the subtle, intellectual texturing a la the Police’s Andy Summers, making this hybrid sound his own.
The heart of the Sun5 groove is shared by drummer Jason Kenyon and bassist Tim Paul Weiner. Kenyon, who also plays percussion, and shares backing vocals with Weiner onstage, lays down a solid foundation with his creative edge, from the Latin inspired funk of, "Mamacita", to the New Orleans influenced crisp back beat of, "You Don’t Know", he feels equally at home fusing genres and crossing between styles, while tastefully maintaining the rock energy that is the pulse driving Sun5. Bassist Tim Paul Weiner reins the songs in with his warm 5 string tone and authoritative restraint which gives ample breathing room to the music. From the anthemic chordal intro of the opener "Evangeline", through the nasty, snap-funk of, "La Di Da", to the rubbery Island influenced pocket and melodic flourishes of the last track, "Montecito", the bass is the soul of Sun5.
From start to finish, Sun5’s first studio release, "Libertad", takes you on a journey through their own blend of refreshingly upbeat and dynamic rootsy rock and roll. There’s something here for every walk-of-life, from the classic rocker at heart in the front row, to the acoustic singer-songwriter fan in the audience, to the descerning musician at the back of the club, everyone can relate to the funky, incantations summoned up by this Boston-based group. Sun5 combine the vibe of an indie-rock group with the kind of hook-laden rock tunes that appeal to the masses.
Local artists Missy Johnson on backing vocals and acoustic folkster Dan Gonzalez also lend their talents to the album.
