After years of hand to hand, friends-only CD-R releases, Echobase, the brainchild of MC/Producer JD, has finally released an official album: HOMEMADEBOMBS. Armed with only a PC, turntable, two mics and a few crates, JD has set up shop anywhere and everywhere he was allowed to make lo-fi, sample-fueled beats for the last five years. This bedroom musician has made the most out of closets and room corners, surrounded by blankets to make a recording booth in his girlfriend’s, best friend’s and parents’ homes.
As a thirteen-year-old from Phoenix, AZ with a big-city urban soul, JD began writing poetry/rhymes as a way to convey his thoughts and emotions. He says hip-hop granted him the "space to express the creative energy [he] might have at any moment. It is simply expression." HOMEMADEBOMBS is a collage of genres bridged together by his true love, hip-hop. His self-reflecting rhymes matched with cinematic soundscapes make HOMEMADEBOMBS a must for those concerned with boundary-breaking hip-hop.
His early influences include Run DMC, Public Enemy, and later Brian Eno, Bjork, and most recently, MF Doom, Madlib and Prefuse 73. With such varied influences you’ll be able to understand why JD’s Echobase is only one of the personas/projects you’ll be seeing from him. His two previously released records were as STAAS, which brought you jazz lost in space. While making the STAAS albums, JD taught himself how to put the tools he had to work. Now that he’s acquired a new toy (an mpc), expect to hear from The Weekenders (also great, by the way), Sick City, and Drug Free School Zone. Each has it’s own combination of the music that JD loves, with a different style and flavor at the forefront. Although hip-hop is the foundation of his music, expect something different from JD with each release. hint: he sneaks out unreleased projects now and again and with this new website thing "who knows" so stay tuned!
JD is an ambiguous, non-conforming, skeptic who is sometimes hard to nail down. He just likes to keep you guessing; sometimes just for fun, other times out of guarded protection. Because of this, getting to know JD has not been easy. I have learned more about him through his music than any other way. I have been shopping for records with him, quietly observed the process of sampling and recording, and slept on the couch while he made beats in the bedroom and recorded in the closet. The best way for you to get to know JD is to listen to his rhymes because, unlike some artists’ say about their own music, his are autobiographical. His rhymes and beats will shed light on his enigmatic character and clue you in to what he believes and, just as important, what he doesn’t.
