Speak Easy got it’s start way back in the fall of 2001, under the name "Me John and Casey". They messed around as a trio for a month or so, writing simple jams and learning stupid pop covers untill the wee hours of the morning. In order to become a real band it was evident that a singer was needed, and so after a lengthy audition process, wrestling superstar Jeremy Gentel was enlisted into the band. At this point, "Me John and Casey" became "Blue Moon Saturday". As far as we can tell, this is where everything started going wrong.
The band began playing crappy shows wherever anyone would let them, and eventually added rythm guitarist Kevin Verni to the mix. Things went on like this for a while, untill lead guitarist John Bush left the band to pursue his career as a dental hygenist. At this point, "Blue Moon Saturday" decided to head in a different, slightly more musical direction, adding an actual bassist to the band named Jameson Hollis, and changing their name to "Speak Easy". Kevin stepped up to lead guitar, and the lineup was set for a year or so. After recording a mediocre demo and playing a couple mediocre shows, Jeremy unfortunately had to leave for tough guy camp. He hasn’t been seen since, we think maybe he got lost in the woods.
Jeremy’s death began a new era in Speak Easy history. Kevin became the lead vocalist, and Maggie Arnold was recruited to sing backup. The band took to writing new songs, giving birth to classics such as "Oh Melanie" and "Scum Recital". They built a nice little home studio in keyboardist Casey Gruttadauria’s basement with the help of Big Bad Dad, where they recorded their much anticipated second EP, "On The Rocks". This time, most everyone could agree that the EP was more than mediocre. Twas brutally rocker!
Following the release of "On The Rocks", the band took to playing shows wherever and whenever they could. They rocked people’s socks off in venues big and small, all the while recording their first full length album in their home studio. Dubbed "Low Moral Character", the entirely independent full length was released in May of 2004 to a frenzy of excitement from the band and fans alike. As the band continues to mature both musically and psychologically, look for Speak Easy to continue playing shows in support of "Low Moral Character" at any hole in the wall that will have them. The band hopes that the future will hold increasingly frequent shows both in and outside of Massachusetts, as well as many more records and songs. Keep an eye out for this up and coming group.
