My good drummer friend Sean and I recorded "Five O’ Clock Jams" as our senior project in high school. All the songs are my original compositions, although some were developed during jam sessions with Sean and include stylistic contributions from him as well as the other artists on the CD.

The goals Sean and I had in mind for this project were balance and variety in the performers, influences, and styles for the CD as a whole.

Hence, the songs on this album take influence from several of our favorite jazz artists, including Miles Davis (specifically, his 1959 Kind of Blue album); Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers; Insight; and Clare Fischer.

Second, the tracks range from a keyboard/drum duet (track 4) to piano trio pieces (tracks 1-3, 5), and a rhythm section quartet (track 6).

Finally, the styles covered on this album include, in the order of the tracks: 60’s swing, avant garde jazz, odd-meter funk, latin/funk, modal jazz, and edgy rock/fusion.

Special thanks go out to:

Paul Toben for dedicating his mad skills in recording and mixing (not to mention his living room) to the project;

Liz Vrolyk for her everpresent digital camera and her corresponding photography skills;

Greg Damiano for his excellent and tasteful cover artwork;

Main Street Coffee Roasting Company for giving us a venue over the summer so we could have an audience for our creativity.
