Album Info:
Like no other album yet-an organic mix of acoustic guitar, percussion, and vocals, wildly sending you on a dreamy trip into the unknown - this collection of funky, folk-rock songs speaks of existentialism and being true to oneself.
Finally, an alternative album straight from the heart and soul of an artist whose improvisations and intentions meld into meaningful songs, much richer than the uniform chord progressions hashed out on today’s radio stations.
Ryan Du Bois’ Manner of Speaking is an impressive display of grass-roots production. Not only did Du Bois write all the songs on the album, but he recorded, edited and produced it himself as well. But Manner of Speaking is not some fuzzy, mediocre recording burned off of a tape recorder. "This is record label quality, without the label," Du Bois said.
The creative force in this album has an organic vibe to it, combining folk and alternative styles. The lyrics are sincere and honest, straight from Du Bois’ experiences. At the same time, his instrumentals send listeners into a meditative zone, allowing us to discover the meanings on a more existential level.
Manner of Speaking is a mixture of raw, untouched inspiration and refined, thoughtful music. For example, songs like the introduction were improvised and recorded on the first take. At the same time, tracks like "Simple Meddling," were layered to add an intentional rise and fall effect.
This is Du Bois’ first album, but look forward to more creations. He plans to record another more polished, longer album. Eventually, Du Bois wants to release his pre-release sketch recordings of Manner of Speaking.
He loves nature, made evident by his naturally flowing rhythms. The release of his first album also signals an overcome obstacle. When he first started creating music, he was very shy about singing. He simply told himself "it’s nothing more than a Manner of Speaking."

Bio:
Perhaps more enchanting than the album is the man behind the album: Ryan du Bois. This 20-year-old computer engineering student from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo has much to offer by way of music.
Music creation has always been a part of his life. "Since I was 3-years-old, I was banging on pots in the kitchen. As I got older, I picked up the saxophone and eventually the guitar," said Ryan.
At first glance, Ryan’s goofy laugh and go-with-the-flow attitude shed little light on his eclectic and spiritual side. But peel back some layers, and you will expose a truly existential being, much like his first album.
Ryan’s hard work and dedication, along will fellow musicians Noah Pritikin on drums and Caleb Clarke on guitar, made it possible to wrap up the first CD in just three months. But the creative process was working far before that. "It’s always been a dream of mine to make a CD," Ryan said.
Music aside, Ryan also finds harmony in nature. "In life, I feel a strong connection with nature," Ryan said, "When I’m in my favorite place, which is Yosemite, I feel so alive, kind of like a rejuvenation."
And when asked about his inspirations, Ryan seeps to his roots. He gets his creativity from his mother, who is an imaginative person herself. Ryan’s drive and ambition stretch from his father, who is 48 and can still outmatch his son. But Ryan sees a lot of his grandfather within his personality; he said he has fond memories of spending a lot of time together.
Ryan’s future is uncertain, but he enjoys that element of mystery and looks forward to what life has to offer while continuing to challenge his musical abilities to grow and wander.
