From the serene island of Puerto Rico to the dangerous streets of Williamsburg, Brooklyn; from singing in the church choir to wowing the hippest of the downtown crowds, singer, songwriter and producer RICARDO ALVARADO has always been a man with a mission.
RICARDO immigrated to the U.S. from Puerto Rico in 1966 with his mother, six brothers and a sister. He immediately got hooked on Motown, and with his high voice, began imitating the likes of the Stylistics and Diana Ross, all the while planning his career in music.
It all started with a project entitled, "The Light." "I wrote the collection of songs quickly, it was just there," he recalls. "I actually started writing on my own because I couldn’t find writers with whom to work." He soon found he had a talent for melodies. "But I knew I had to find a producer." As fate would have it, he soon began collaborating with Michael LaGennusa and something magical happened between the two. Together they produced a series of recordings. First came a four song project appropriately named "The Light" then "Bonded Together," another four tune effort, followed by "Reach My Level of Love," a twelve song collection, which included an early mix of the crowd-pleasing single "Lies."
His most recent projects include two pop songs entitled "Never Gonna Let You Down," "24/7" and a promotional music video entitled "Unveiled." Come late fall ALVARADO will follow with a fifteen song compilation CD also entitled "Unveiled" that will feature the best of his career since 1992, celebrating a decade in music.
Over the past several years and in support of his many releases, RICARDO has toured Canada, and the Caribbean, in addition to his many shows in New York City at such prestigious venues as Webster Hall, Club USA, Le Bar Bat and The Limelight. Through performances he also supported a number of worthwhile causes including Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (Central Park Bandshell), the LLEGO National Conference Cultural Event ’98 in Puerto Rico, and Pa’Fuera Pa’lante Northeast Conference Cultural Event ’99 in New York, as well as performing on Gay and Lesbian Pride stages throughout the boroughs of NYC. In addition, he has used his talents to bolster efforts to end world hunger and AIDS.
The media has also been paying attention to ALVARADO. He has been spotlighted in such diverse publications as Billboard, Time Out, MetroSource and the Daily News. His swarthy good looks make him more than media friendly on camera too, with television interviews, appearances and coverage on Fox 5 News, Real People, the Marcia Steiner Show, WABC News, Party Talk and WCBS News. And he received the ultimate compliment when David Letterman spoofed him on Late Night. For more information on Ricardo Alvarado
