Led by singer-songwriter Katy Chamis, Poor Valentino have been mainstays on the indie rock scene in Chapel Hill and Raleigh for several years. In the many positive reviews the band has received, writers have described the Poor Valentino’s music as sounding something like the Pretenders, the Bangles, or even Sheryl Crow. Katy’s songs are carefully crafted, with great attention to paid to the message and mood of each one, and this is very much in the singer-songwriter writer mode. The band does more than just fill out the arrangement, however, and the tracks on the debut album are filled with catchy hooks and engaging instrumental ideas.
The first track on the CD provides a colorful lyrical romp through a series of Nick at Night television references as the track drives ahead in a seemingly upbeat and happy way. But behind the clever cascade of small-screen references is a much more serious point about the sometimes insidious effects of TV, captured in the chorus’s key line: "television ain’t the family." This track provides just one example of how Poor Valentino’s music is not only catchy, but also substantial enough to bear up under repeated listening.
The band is currently working on a second album to be released in the second half of 2005.
