"TRÅD." is a celebration of Scandinavian folk tunes for bowed strings, performed by Barry Phillips on cello along with two of Sweden’s premier players - Sweden’s first National Nyckelharpa Champion - Olov Johansson of the band Väsen, and virtuoso fiddler Olof Göthlin. Arrangements that look back to the old, and forward to the future.

"TRÅD.", the title of this album, is a combination of the abbreviation "trad." for "traditional" and the Swedish and Norwegian word "tråd" meaning "thread".

Barry Phillips - cello & arranger
Barry has played cello with classical, folk, pop and singer songwriters since the 1970’s. He can be heard on over a dozen recording on Gourd Music label, as well as Ken Burns soundtracks and on cd’s by artist such as Martin Simpson, Anoushka Shankar and Camel.

Barry has a Masters of Music degree in composition from the San
Francisco Conservatory of Music. Since 1996 Barry has been a student of Ravi Shankar and has assisted in the composing and performing with projects for Mstislav Rostropovich, the Concert for George, and others.


Olov Johansson - nyckelharpa
In 1990 Olov became history’s first world nyckelharpa champion. He has been playing nyckelharpa since he was fourteen and had as his teachers both Curt Tallroth, a National Master Musician and Eric Sahlström, the undisputed nyckelharpa master of our times. You may know him from his amazing band - Våsen.


Olof Göthlin - fiddle
A virtuoso fiddler from Värmland, Sweden, at age sixteen Olof was accepted into Sundsta, the renowned performing arts high school in Karlstad, Värmland. For three years he studied classical music, jazz and Swedish folkmusic. By his second year at Sundsta, he was a member of the acclaimed group - Gorm. Olof can also be heard on the recordings by his excellent band - Bjärv.
