Baby Fantasy: Projections of a New Mother
The Story

Years in the making, this awesome musical CD follows the journey of a new mother, who, after asking the hard questions during delivery of her first child, falls into a dream fueled by exhaustion and hormones. In the dream, the mother becomes her own baby daughter. Her husband, her doctors and nurses have all joined her as infants.

Written from an RN perspective, we listen and follow the mother and her friends through stages of growth and development. In the nursery, the issues involve being new to the world, breast feeding, and meeting needs in a world without language. As the scenes progress, so do the ages of the children. In the pediatrician’s office at 1 year, some of the children are walking. The concerns are of health and language. At 21/2 years, the playground scene addresses safety-both physical and emotional. The last day of pre-school finds the children as essential components of society and the importance of finding one’s place in the world.

When the mother wakes from her dream, she has answered her own questions and is now relaxed enough to embrace her new role as mother. She sings a lullaby in the form of a promise to her baby. The nurse informs her that before long , GOD willing, she will be a grandmother. The mother then goes into a waking dream and becomes her own grandmother looking back on having raised a child. In this way, all female familial roles have been played.

This CD is the perfect baby shower gift from one mother to another. The music has a long shelf life in that it takes months for a child to pass through the stages. Parents will listen to songs over and over and each time a child passes through that event, the song will take on new meaning.

Children love the music even though it’s content is mature. Older adults love the music because it takes them back. Certain songs are public messages. This CD has something for everyone.

It celebrates the small miracles that mothers usually experience alone such as a first word or step. It celebrates the vulnerability and tenderness and courage it takes to teach children independence in a fearsome world. Most of all, this CD celebrates the birth of a family.
