"... beautiful melodies and great textures ... The kind of record I just fall into and take the journey."
--Rick Slater, producer (Lou Reed, Keith Richards)
"...obvious quicksilver intelligence of ensemble and arranging. Thanks to Ms. Miller for putting this together."
-- Catherine M. Gollery, Senior Music Director, AOL Entertainment
"To get a grip on Miller’s music, try to imagine a musical conference call between, say, Bela Bartok and Brian Eno, or Mstislav Rostropovich and Jimmy Page... cranking it out with a rock-n-roll attitude."
-- J.C. Lockwood, Merrimac River Current
Kristen Miller has a cello, and she’s not afraid to use it...
Whether she’s tapping out an African rhythm, cranking out a driving bass line, or weaving a hypnotic melody, her self-composed music hints at folk, alternative, and world music traditions, yet always settles into its own unmistakably original sound. A seasoned performer with a searing live vibe, Kristen has been hailed by music critic Jamie Perkins as "the Eddie van Halen of the cello."
By using digital looping technology, Kristen can construct an entire work, literally playing several parts, in harmony, at the same time. In live performance and on her debut album, Later That Day, Kristen combines this looping technology with various effects and the warmth of an antique cello, taking the instrument away from the classical style and into a funky new frontier of multi-layered sound and texture. Adding his incredible rhythmic stylings to Later That Day is percussionist Scott Kessel.
While her classical training (B.A. Music) gave her the chops to play the works she now writes and performs, it was her study of folk and ethnic music at NYU that truly planted the seeds for her present musical style. Time spent in places like Washington Square Park, soaking up various ethnic musical styles, greatly impacted her writing.
As enthusiastic audiences pack venues for her shows, her debut CD has charted on college and community radio throughout the US and Canada, enjoying extensive radio play on many stations including AOL Web Radio/Spinner.com. Contributing her unique cello voice to new albums for several artists, including Nashville singer Jamie Kindleyside and heavy metal band Tripsicle, Miller’s playing style is fast becoming a recognizable cross-genre sound.
