His sometimes satirical and unashamedly heartfelt lyrics draw the picture of who he is and where he is going. Hailing from Chico, CA, Josh Funk started writing songs as soon as he figured out his first three chords and by the age of 15 was already winning city songwriting competitions against people twice his age. "I never thought through what I was doing when I was a kid. I just started writing songs and that’s still what I do today. Now looking back on it, I feel blessed for my naivety, and wish I had more of it."
By the time he was 17, Josh started to build a small following when he was given his own night at a coffee shop called the Daily Grind. "I played there for about five months, and in a way my songwriting grew up there. At first only a couple of friends showed up to watch me but by the end, the place was standing room only. Some of my best memories are of those times. I could write a song, and try it out on an audience that week."
By the Spring of 2000, Josh had found himself recording with his bands, as well as his solo work on the side. He self released "The Outlet Disadvantage," his first endeavor as a solo artist. In it’s first two weeks it sold near 200 copies strictly through word of mouth. Still a bit reluctant to go that road though, he formed the emotionally driven rock quartet, the farewell letter. They reached moderate success in the northern California area, being played on numerous radio stations like ZROCK and KFM, on top of doing a series of small tours and college shows. However, Josh never felt that the farewell letter reached their full potential and after a few years of struggling to make things work within the band, he decided to focus his attention on songwriting once again.
In late December of 2003 he spent 3 months in the studio recording what was to become "A Jukebox Envy"; a six song E.P. where every instrument was played by Josh except drum tracks. Influences like Weezer and Elliot Smith found themselves seeping through the music, and Josh opened his soul through lyrics of both skepticism and heartache. "This album is really about relationships and dreams. Falling in love and falling apart. The song "Implode" is about awkward silences between two people, "Every Five Minutes" is about the girl I was in love with and how when I finally got her, we were never what we thought we’d be. As for the rest, they deal with everything between bliss and disaster...my life as I’ve known it so far."
