Words Everyone and No One Knows:
Janubia’s unusual debut CD, "Mother Tongue" (www.janubia.com) is a one-of-a-kind new release from InCreation.
Audiences of all ages and nations are singing lyrics from "Mother Tongue" even though Janubia sings in a language unknown to man. Fans, who call themselves "Janubians", debate whether it sounds more like Portuguese or French or Spanish.
Asked if she had a name for the language and where it came from, Janubia said, "No, I have no name for the language but when I was young I used to call it my "prayer language" because I would sing the things that were in my heart without analyzing. As for it’s origin ...If you’re looking for empirical evidence I have to say, "I’ve no idea where it comes from", but what I KNOW is that it comes from "source". We all have access to that juice:) People understand it somehow. It opens the heart."
Backed by virtuoso guitarist Alex de Rafols (Spain), and the multi-cultural percussion sensibilities of Andrew Mills (South Africa) with Guest Appearances by critically acclaimed musicians Alain Johannes (Chile) and Natasha Shneider (Russia), Janubia soulfully sings unearthly yet familiar melodies that speak volumes about the human condition without uttering a single recognizable word.
Her CD’s eclectic repertoire spans an unusual range of genres. The first cut, "Setah," a fast-paced Spanish guitar lament that is both uplifting and sad, evokes the sphere of Latin or World music. The second cut, "Betinah Vijad," starts off as a jovial medium-tempo shuffle that turns dark and heavy in the triplet-studded chorus - something that might be heard on an adventurous pop station reaching out to teens and young adults.
Janubia is a seasoned performer who first took the stage at three years old and attended the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston. She has graced stages from the east to the west coast. Appearing as a guest performer on numerous CDs for friends and peers as well as acting in a few films has added to her adventures.
Mother Tongue crosses borders of nationality, age, gender and even musical preference. Janubia draws us in with her borderless language, helping us remember the non-literal experience of ourselves. A veritable Rorschach test of musical sensibilities, Janubia’s performances on "Mother Tongue" are riveting, pulsating mysteries whose inspired innovation speaks the common language of the heart with no translation necessary.
