In the 90s, Herman Grimme was a keyboardplayer/songwriter and one half of successful Dutch duo "De Jazzpolitie". A few years ago he set up his home-studio and started writing and recording his first solo album.

"Greetings from the Netherlands. When I first had correspondence with Herman Grimme, I have to admit I didn't know what to expect. And truthfully, after listening to this record, I'm not sure I still know what happened. I say it over and over again, but after all these years of reviewing, I still manage to be surprised at how quickly and willingly I shed my jaded exterior when I feel I'm on the verge of discovering a major talent.

This is one of those records that has the potential of busting down international doors. It's simple, elegant, classic, and pathbreaking. As I listened to the first few songs, I felt like I was reliving the moment I first heard The The. And having been fortunate enough to work on a session with the unmatched Matt Johnson, the flashbacks I had listening to this disc literally left me in awe. It sounds funny for me to say that, "awe", because that indescribable feeling is what separates a GREAT album from a very good or excellent one. And what's so funny about this, is that it's simply just how Herman Grimme writes songs.

This record is a piece of art, all clean lines, smooth textures, solidly structured, understated but emoting in volumes. It's quiet, and the beauty of this is, that it sneaks up on you and grabs hold of your brain just at that moment when the melodies lull you into relaxation. At its best, this album rediscovers that quiet humility and humanity that great songs possess, having the ability to build up your emotions and rip them apart simultaneously.

I'll admit, that's a lot of praise, but even if you don't get it on the first listen, I promise you that you will eventually. Herman Grimme writes in the classic, quirky style of The The, XTC, and brings touches of Neil Finn and the Dandy Warhols. This is a fantastic record, one of the best I've heard this year, bar none.
